The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has issued a statement clarifying recent media reports that suggested certain Distribution Companies (DisCos) received zero megawatt (MW) allocations between March 20 and March 22, 2026.
In a press release, NISO firmly rejected these claims as inaccurate, emphasizing that at no point during the specified period was any DisCo allotted a zero megawatt allocation.
According to NISO, while the national power system did face reduced generation levels due to gas supply constraints, all available generation was continuously dispatched and equitably shared among all Distribution Companies.
The organization pointed out that load allocation follows the framework set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), designed to ensure fair distribution of electricity based on established principles.
“NISO categorically states that no Distribution Company was completely excluded from receiving power supply. Variations in electricity supply across different locations were a result of the overall reduction in available generation—not due to zero allocation to any DisCo,” the statement read.
The Independent System Operator reiterated its commitment to transparency and the efficient dispatch of electricity in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
It urged the public and stakeholders to rely on verified information from official sources to prevent the spread of misleading reports.
NISO’s clarifications come in response to growing concerns regarding the state of the nation’s electricity supply and distribution, particularly amid reports alleging disparities in power allocation during critical periods.
Management signed off the statement, encouraging continued dialogue and engagement within the sector to preserve trust and ensure reliable power supply for all.
