Nine members of the House of Representatives have defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress, in a development signalling a major political realignment in Kano State.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the defections during plenary on Tuesday, formally confirming the lawmakers’ move to the ruling party.
The defectors are Ghali Mustapha, Shehu Bello, Dankawu Idris, Hussain Hassan Shehu, Rabiu Yusuf, Garba Chiroma, Ibrahim Mohammed, Tijjani Jobe, and Aliu Madaki, the deputy minority leader.
The plenary session was attended by key political figures, including Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; and former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The defections come amid ongoing political shifts in the state, following Yusuf’s earlier move from the NNPP to the APC in January, which strained his relationship with Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso has since aligned with the African Democratic Party, further underscoring the evolving political landscape in Kano.
The latest defections are expected to strengthen the APC’s influence in the state as political actors reposition ahead of future elections.
