The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that while the number of Lassa fever infections is declining, fatalities from the disease remain worryingly high.
In its latest epidemiological update, the NCDC noted that the reduction in new cases is encouraging but stressed that the lethality of Lassa fever continues to pose a serious public health challenge.
The agency urged health facilities and communities to remain vigilant, emphasizing early detection, prompt treatment, and strict adherence to infection prevention measures.
In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the NCDC recorded 645 confirmed cases and 118 fatalities, raising the CFR to 18.3%. Twenty health workers across multiple states were also infected during this period.
Health authorities reiterated the importance of public awareness campaigns, safe food handling, and proper sanitation to prevent further spread, particularly in endemic areas. The NCDC also called for continued support to healthcare workers and hospitals managing Lassa fever patients.
