Nigerian sprinter Godson Brume has formally pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by an alien admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa.
The 22-year-old athlete, who holds the distinction of being the fourth-fastest man in Nigeria’s history in the 100m event, entered his plea before U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick in Baton Rouge on December 3, 2025.
Following his guilty plea, Brume, who was in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa, now faces a significant potential sentence:
-
Up to 15 years imprisonment.
-
A fine of $250,000.
-
Up to three years of supervised release.
-
Possible deportation from the United States upon completion of his sentence.
The charge stems from a violent domestic incident that occurred on February 7, 2025, at Brume’s apartment in Baton Rouge.
The incident began when Brume’s ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his infant child, arrived at the apartment with the baby.
An argument ensued outside, during which Brume, who admitted to possessing a Glock 43X pistol, discharged the weapon while the child was present.
The confrontation escalated, and Brume fired the weapon multiple times as the mother of his child attempted to flee. Investigators later found bullet impacts in the walls of the apartment complex.
Authorities also stated that Brume smashed the woman’s phone, took the child, and discarded the firearm in nearby shrubs before deputies detained him. During a post-Miranda interview, Brume claimed he had shot the gun to scare his ex-girlfriend away.
Brume, who boasts a personal best of 9.90 seconds in the 100m, achieved significant collegiate success in 2023, winning silver at the NCAA Championships and helping the LSU 4x100m relay team set an NCAA record of 37.90s and claim the national title.
