The Nigerian Senate will finalise the 2026 Appropriation Bill on 31 March, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced Thursday, with ongoing committee budget sessions continuing through the Sallah recess.
Akpabio told plenary that the leadership is working closely with the Committee on Appropriations to harmonise the budget report so that the Senate can pass it promptly when sessions resume.
He emphasised the importance of coordination with the House of Representatives to ensure both chambers approve a consistent version of the national budget.
“I hope the leadership will ensure the Committee on Appropriations finalises the report so we can pass the budget without further delays. The House of Representatives has also scheduled to conclude their process on 31 March. It is important that both chambers act in tandem”, he said.
The Senate will continue committee hearings and budget defence sessions during the Sallah break to review proposals from various ministries, departments, and agencies.
Akpabio stressed that the timely passage of the budget is critical to sustaining national development projects, funding key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure and ensuring economic stability.
