Renowned Nigerian live band leader and founder of the Shuga Band, Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50.
His death was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Monday. According to the statement, Akiin Shuga died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.
Describing the late performer as a “revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” the family paid tribute to his remarkable legacy in Nigeria’s live music scene.
“Akiin Shuga was more than a musician, he was a symbol of joy, energy, and inspiration through music,” the statement read in part.
The family added that details of his funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, requesting privacy and quiet reflection during this period of mourning.
Akiin Shuga, who led one of Nigeria’s most popular live bands, was known for his charisma, uplifting performances, and contributions to the country’s entertainment industry.
He is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
