Nigeria has officially joined the International Association of Judges (IAJ), following the admission of the National Association of Judges in Nigeria (NAJN) as a member at the IAJ’s 67th annual meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The announcement was made in a statement by the media aide to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on Monday in Abuja. The development marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian judiciary, reflecting global confidence in its commitment to judicial excellence and independence.
Reacting to the admission, Justice Kekere-Ekun described it as a moment of pride and responsibility, reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to the rule of law, judicial independence, and human rights protection.
“Nigeria embraces this membership with humility and a deep sense of duty. We are determined to contribute actively to the association’s mission and further strengthen the independence of our judiciary,” she said.
With this recognition, Nigeria becomes the 93rd member of the IAJ, which brings together judges from across five continents to promote justice and judicial integrity worldwide.
At the previous IAJ Central Council meeting in Taipei (September 2023), Justice Duro Sessa of Croatia was elected President for a two-year term, while Justice Giacomo Oberto of Italy was reappointed Secretary-General for a sixth term.
