The Federal Government has launched an Inter-Ministerial Committee to enforce the ban on single-use plastics, signaling a strong commitment to tackling pollution and promoting environmental sustainability across Nigeria. The ban covers PET bottles, styrofoam, plastic bags, sachet water, and straws – items identified as major contributors to environmental pollution nationwide.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the General Services Office, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, inaugurated the committee in Abuja.
In a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the OSGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume said the decision reflects government’s resolve to address the health and environmental threats posed by indiscriminate plastic use and disposal.
He explained that the policy followed Federal Executive Council approval granted on June 25, 2024, based on a memo presented by the Minister of Environment.
Akume noted that improper disposal of plastics causes marine pollution, land degradation, and long-term health risks due to toxic chemicals. He added that the measure aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under international conventions aimed at protecting ecosystems and marine life.
The newly inaugurated committee includes representatives from key ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as stakeholder organisations. It is tasked with coordinating and monitoring the phase-out of single-use plastics, investigating challenges, and designing practical strategies to encourage sustainable environmental practices.
The government says the initiative highlights Nigeria’s leadership in environmental protection and reinforces its commitment to sustainable development, responsible consumption, and preserving ecosystems for future generations.
