The Nigerian government has clarified its position on citizens affected by the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, confirming that some Nigerians in the region have made enquiries about possible evacuation.
The clarification follows earlier reports which quoted the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) as saying no distress calls had been received from Nigerians in Iran.
In a subsequent statement, NiDCOM spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said he did not issue any categorical claim denying contact from Nigerians. Rather, he explained that a few citizens in Iran, as well as in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, had reached out to seek information on contingency arrangements should evacuation become necessary.
He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with relevant government agencies to monitor the situation and determine appropriate steps.
The commission advised Nigerians in affected countries to comply with official travel advisories and use the emergency contact lines provided by the Ministry.
Balogun assured that the Federal Government is closely tracking developments and would take necessary measures to protect Nigerian lives if conditions warrant evacuation.
