The Federal Government has launched a nationwide diabetes screening programme, using locally manufactured glucose monitoring systems produced by Colexa Biosensor Limited.
The initiative officially began this week in the North-Central geopolitical zone with the training of government health officials across primary healthcare centres (PHCs). A nationwide screening campaign targeting five million Nigerians across all 774 Local Government Areas will follow.
As part of the programme, the Federal Government will distribute more than 77,000 units of the OnPoint Blood Glucose Monitoring System, produced by Colexa Biosensor in Lagos, to individuals diagnosed with diabetes. Each PHC will also receive diagnostic and monitoring devices to support ongoing community-level diabetes care.
The National Desk Officer for Diabetes at the Federal Ministry of Health, Alayo Sopekan, described diabetes as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing health burdens and stressed the importance of early detection and monitoring, “Many Nigerians are living with diabetes, some aware, many not.
This initiative aims to identify cases early, improve access, reduce costs, and strengthen local capacity, aligning with the administration’s commitment to advancing the healthcare value chain”.
On his part, the Managing Director of Colexa Biosensor, Kingsley Aguoru, expressed gratitude for being selected as a key local manufacturer for the programme, saying “This partnership reflects the Federal Government’s confidence in Nigerian manufacturing capacity.
At Colexa Biosensor, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, reliable diagnostic tools to enhance early detection and long-term management of diabetes nationwide”, he added.
