The Nigerian Government has inaugurated a number of landmark health facilities at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) in Gombe State, in a move designed to enhance healthcare delivery and expand training opportunities for medical professionals across the North-East.
The newly commissioned projects include the Isolation and Molecular Laboratory Complex, the Engineering Services Department Complex, the Anaesthesia Complex, the Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Centre, a full-scale Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, and the College of Nursing Sciences.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Saturday, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“These projects are strategic on many fronts,” Prof. Pate stated. “They include diagnostic facilities such as CT scans, emergency services for women and children, and institutions for nursing and specialised training”.
He noted that the new facilities would significantly strengthen the hospital’s capacity to serve not only Gombe State but the wider North-East and even neighbouring countries.
“With this development, our health sector is becoming a beacon of hope beyond Nigeria’s borders,” he added. “With strong leadership and collective effort, we can build the resilient health system we desire, no one will do it for us”, he added.
Addressing the issue of manpower shortages, the Minister revealed that the Federal Government had doubled the admission quota for health training institutions in the past two years.
“Infrastructure for training is expanding, and curricula are being upgraded. With facilities like these, our health workers will be better equipped and more effective,” he said.
In her remarks, Chairperson of the Board of FTH Gombe and APC Deputy National Women Leader, Zainab Ibrahim, described the projects as a boost to the government’s commitment to accessible and affordable healthcare.
“This aligns perfectly with Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda of ensuring quality healthcare for every Nigerian,” she said.
Also speaking, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya commended the Federal Government for its continued investment in the health sector.
“We are making steady progress, and with initiatives like this, we are confident of achieving our goals”, the governor said.
