The Nigerian Government has begun construction of a six-man residential quarters for rank-and-file police officers at Ozalla Police Station in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, to improve the welfare and efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force.
The groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday was led by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) in partnership with the Enugu State Government and other stakeholders.
NPTF Executive Secretary, Muhammed Sheidu, said the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for security sector reforms, noting that poor housing has long affected police morale and performance.
Commending the state government for providing the land, Sheidu said, “This accommodation in Ozalla is a deliberate effort to address the housing gap for officers. A well-housed officer is more motivated and effective”,
Representing the Inspector-General of Police, Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, praised the project as timely and impactful. He said it would boost morale, improve working conditions, and enhance operational efficiency, and assured support for its timely completion.
The state command urged the NPTF to extend similar interventions to other facilities, including renovating a nearby six-man quarters and constructing a headquarters for the Agbani Area Command.
Community and local leaders welcomed the project, describing it as a positive development for police personnel and the area. They highlighted the importance of improving police facilities and urged that the construction be durable and well-maintained, given the strategic role of the station.
