Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 13 Brigade have successfully repelled a deadly ambush by suspected armed attackers while responding to a security alert triggered by a communal dispute in Obubra Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 13 Brigade Headquarters, Yemi Sokoya, said the incident occurred on Thursday after troops stationed in Ochon and Alesi received intelligence on escalating tensions in Odonget Community.
According to the Army, soldiers were immediately deployed to the troubled area to prevent violence and restore calm between the communities involved in the dispute. A show-of-force operation was carried out, which successfully de-escalated tensions and restored order.
However, while withdrawing from the area, the troops reportedly encountered a strategically mounted roadblock believed to have been set up by armed criminals as part of a planned ambush.
“While attempting to clear the obstruction, troops came under coordinated attack from unknown gunmen, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire,” the statement said.
Following an urgent contact report from the troops on ground, reinforcements from the 245 Battalion were swiftly deployed with armoured and tactical support vehicles, enabling the military to overpower the attackers and regain full control of the area.
During the confrontation, four suspected attackers were neutralised, while several others fled with possible injuries.
The Army confirmed that one soldier sustained injuries during the exchange and was immediately evacuated to Jennifer Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Security forces have since launched cordon-and-search operations in nearby communities suspected to have links to the attackers, with the aim of apprehending fleeing suspects and preventing further threats.
To strengthen security and prevent renewed violence, authorities have also imposed a curfew in the affected area.
Commander of the 13 Brigade, Patrick Alimikhena, praised the courage and professionalism of the troops, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace across Cross River State.
He also urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and provide credible intelligence that could support ongoing operations.
