The Nigerian Army has intensified its security operations across North-Central Nigeria with the deployment of a newly trained Special Forces unit to Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states. The deployment, ordered by Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and address escalating insecurity in vulnerable communities.
According to a statement by Ahmad Zubairu, acting spokesperson for OPWS, the COAS Special Intervention Battalion XV was recently graduated from an intensive Special Forces training programme at the Nigerian Army Training Centre in Kontagora.
The troops are expected to serve as a “force multiplier” for OPWS, complementing existing security efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks, curbing banditry, and restoring stability in areas plagued by violence.
“The deployment of these highly trained soldiers underscores the Army’s commitment to safeguarding communities and protecting livelihoods disrupted by criminal activities”, the statement partly read.
The new deployment will specifically support farming communities and other socio-economically critical areas, where banditry and armed attacks have disrupted daily life. OPWS officials noted that collaboration with sister security agencies would be crucial for the success of the operation, ensuring coordinated efforts to restore order, protect civilians, and secure key infrastructure.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu also approved the assignment of the newly graduated Special Forces to other operational theatres nationwide, reflecting a broader strategy to enhance the Army’s rapid response capability across the country. The troops are expected to act decisively against terrorist and criminal networks while reinforcing community trust in the security apparatus.
