The Nigerian Army has assured traders at the Onitsha Main Market of adequate security and protection, following their decision to resume business activities after years of disruption caused by criminal threats in Anambra State.
In a statement issued by the Headquarters 82 Division, the Army commended traders for what it described as a “courageous and patriotic” decision to reopen the commercial hub, saying the move represents a collective stand against insecurity and a significant boost for economic recovery in the South-East.
The Division noted that for years, criminal elements posing as freedom fighters had instilled fear, disrupted livelihoods and sought to cripple commercial activities across the region.
According to the Army, those actions were aimed at destabilising communities, undermining public confidence in government institutions and stalling economic growth.
It said the resolve shown by traders in returning to their shops further validates the progress made by security agencies in restoring stability.
By rejecting intimidation and resuming lawful business, the Army said the traders had demonstrated resilience and an unwavering commitment to peace and development.
The 82 Division assured traders, residents and other stakeholders that Onitsha Main Market, as well as other economic centres across the South-East, would be fully protected.
It stated that security forces remain fully deployed and on high alert, adding that intelligence-led operations are ongoing to dismantle the remaining hideouts of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network.
“The safety of lives and property of traders and all law-abiding citizens remains our highest priority,” the statement said, urging residents to go about their lawful activities without fear and to reject what it described as empty threats from criminal elements.
The Army also issued a warning to those involved in violence and criminality in the region, calling on them to lay down their arms, renounce violence and embrace peace.
It warned that unrepentant offenders would face the full weight of the law and the decisive force of security agencies, stressing that there would be “no hiding place for enemies of peace.”
Reaffirming its mandate, the Division reiterated its commitment to the protection of citizens, the security of lives and property, and the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Members of the public were encouraged to disregard false or malicious threats intended to undermine peace efforts and to provide credible intelligence on security concerns for prompt action.
The General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander of the Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, also acknowledged the political will and support of the Anambra State Government, describing the collaboration as instrumental to efforts aimed at restoring normalcy and creating an enabling environment for commerce and development to thrive.
