Bola Tinubu delivered a landmark address at Windsor Castle during a state banquet hosted by Charles III, using the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, his personal role in the pro-democracy struggle, and the enduring ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Speaking before dignitaries at the historic banquet — part of the first full state visit by a Nigerian leader to Britain in nearly four decades — President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the support he received while in exile during Nigeria’s military era, recalling how British authorities offered him protection during one of the most dangerous periods of his political life. He described Nigeria–UK relations as a partnership shaped by shared history, democratic ideals, and deep people-to-people connections, noting that both countries continue to benefit from decades of political, cultural, and economic engagement.
President Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding strategic cooperation with the United Kingdom, particularly in tackling regional security threats, strengthening counter-terrorism collaboration, and unlocking new opportunities for trade and investment.
Highlighting the influence of Nigerians living in Britain, he praised the diaspora for its remarkable contributions across healthcare, business, technology, education, and the creative industries — sectors that continue to serve as powerful bridges between both nations.
The address underscored the growing diplomatic momentum between Abuja and London, as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in a rapidly changing global landscape.
