A U.S. Congressional delegation arrived in Abuja on a fact-finding mission, meeting with National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu to discuss regional security and counter-terrorism cooperation.
Ribadu shared the development on his X handle on Sunday, noting that the visit follows earlier discussions in Washington DC, focused on shared security priorities.
“This morning, I received a U.S. Congressional delegation on a fact-finding mission to Nigeria, following our earlier engagements in Washington on shared security priorities.
“The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, was also present at the meeting, highlighting the significance both nations attach to this engagement”, Ribadu said.
According to the NSA, discussions centered on counter-terrorism cooperation, regional stability, and strengthening the strategic security partnership between Nigeria and the United States. He expressed optimism that the engagement would deepen trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to peace and security.
The meeting comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions following US President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged religious freedom violations, a move accompanied by potential threats of military intervention.
The Federal Government has consistently rejected claims of systemic persecution, emphasizing that insecurity affects citizens across all religious backgrounds.
