Defence Headquarters says operation demonstrates government’s commitment to combating terrorism with international partners
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that recent airstrikes in Nigeria’s North West were carried out in collaboration with the United States, highlighting the Federal Government’s determination to tackle terrorism.
In a statement on Friday, DHQ spokesman Major-General Samaila Uba said the precision strikes targeted foreign ISIS-linked elements operating in the region, following credible intelligence and careful operational planning aimed at minimising collateral damage while degrading the terrorists’ operational capabilities.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in conjunction with the United States of America, has successfully conducted precision strike operations against identified foreign ISIS-linked elements operating in parts of North West Nigeria,” Uba said.
Government Emphasises Strategic International Cooperation
According to Uba, the operation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to confronting transnational terrorism and preventing foreign fighters from establishing footholds in the country. He added that the strikes were executed with appropriate authority approvals as part of ongoing efforts to secure national stability.
“This action clearly demonstrates the unwavering resolve of the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with strategic international partners, to confront transnational terrorism and prevent foreign fighters from gaining any foothold within our borders,” he stated.
The DHQ reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting lives and property nationwide, stressing continued support for joint, inter-agency, and international counter-terrorism efforts.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Confirms Structured Cooperation
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, also confirmed ongoing intelligence sharing and strategic coordination with international partners, including the U.S., in line with international law and respect for national sovereignty.
Ebienfa emphasised that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism initiatives aim to protect civilians, uphold national unity, and safeguard the rights of all citizens, noting that violence against any religious or ethnic group is unacceptable.
The statements come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that American forces had carried out deadly strikes against Islamic State terrorists in Northwestern Nigeria.
