Nigeria has officially submitted a bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja, signaling a potential return of the sport to Africa for the first time since 1993.
National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, confirmed that the proposal was sent to the FIA and Formula 1 Management through Opus Racing Promotions, Nigeria’s representative in the talks. Dikko described the bid as a showcase of Nigeria’s “capacity, creativity, and commitment to world-class sporting infrastructure.”
The Abuja Grand Prix enjoys government and private sector backing, with invitations extended to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, racing legend Lewis Hamilton, and Tilke Engineers & Architects for site inspections.
The move follows Nigeria’s successful hosting of the first-ever E1 Lagos GP, Africa’s inaugural all-electric powerboat race, and comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games — a first for the continent.
