Nigeria has emerged as a global leader in digital governance, earning two prestigious international awards at the 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit held in Spain.
The achievement was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Hadiza Umar.
She noted that NITDA, in collaboration with civil society organization Dataphyte, led Nigeria’s efforts that secured the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, recognizing the nation’s commitment to advancing Open Digital Governance across the region.
Nigeria further made history by winning the Thematic Award as the overall global winner in the Digital Governance category, emerging top among 160 commitments submitted by 42 participating countries.
“These recognitions are not only a testament to NITDA’s unwavering commitment to building an inclusive, citizen-centered digital ecosystem but also to the effectiveness of Nigeria’s collaborative approach between government and civil society,” the statement read.
It added that through initiatives anchored on openness, innovation, and data-driven policymaking, Nigeria continues to demonstrate how digital transformation enhances accountability and public trust in governance.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s winning commitments showcased strategic frameworks and policies promoting transparency, accessibility, and inclusiveness, core principles championed by NITDA under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
