Regulator reports 70,888 new meters installed in August 2025 amid ongoing reforms to enhance transparency and customer trust….
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says the number of active electricity customers nationwide rose from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025, reflecting steady growth across all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
The data, contained in the Commission’s latest Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025 and released on its official X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram handles on Monday, provides an overview of customer registration and metering trends in the power sector.
According to the report, 6.58 million customers were metered as of August, representing a metering rate of 55.01%, up slightly from 54.71% in July. A total of 70,888 customers were newly metered in August, compared to 76,783 in July, underscoring continued efforts to improve transparency and reduce estimated billing within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
“The improved metering figures reflect ongoing reforms and investments in customer management by DisCos aimed at enhancing billing transparency and consumer trust,” the regulator said.
Eko, Ikeja, Abuja DisCos Lead in Metering Coverage
Among the top performers in metering coverage were Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), Ikeja Electric (IKEDC), and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
Eko DisCo achieved a metering rate of 84.25%, Ikeja DisCo recorded 84.83%, while Abuja DisCo maintained 73.92%, the report noted.
NERC Enforces Compliance on Billing Regulations
In April, the Commission penalised eight DisCos for violating approved energy caps on estimated billing for unmetered customers.
The affected companies included Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ikeja Electric (IKEDC), Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), Kaduna Electric, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC).
NERC imposed monetary sanctions exceeding ₦628 million on the DisCos and ordered them to provide credit adjustments to all affected customers as part of remedial measures.
Metering Growth Gains Momentum
Earlier this year, NERC disclosed that the DisCos installed 225,631 meters in the second quarter of 2025, marking a 20.55% increase compared to 187,161 meters installed in the first quarter.
According to the Commission’s Q2 2025 report, of the total installations:
- 147,823 meters (65.52%) were installed under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework,
- 65,315 meters under the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme,
- 12,259 meters through the Vendor-Financed model, and
- 234 meters under the DisCo-Financed scheme.
NERC noted that the ongoing metering programmes, combined with regulatory enforcement and financing reforms, are expected to drive higher consumer satisfaction and improved revenue collection efficiency across Nigeria’s electricity distribution network.
