Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attended the swearing-in and inauguration of President Mamadi Doumbouya of Guinea-Conakry, reinforcing Nigeria’s leadership role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Doumbouya’s inauguration followed his victory in Guinea’s December 2025 general elections, formally ending four years of military transition and marking a significant return to democratic governance in the country.
Shettima’s presence at the ceremony underscored Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, regional stability and constitutional governance across West Africa, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
Under Guinea’s new constitution approved by referendum in September 2025, President Doumbouya will serve a single seven-year term, renewable once, extending presidential tenure from the previous five-year limit.
The inauguration, held at the General Lansana Conté Stadium in Conakry, attracted several African leaders and high-ranking officials, including representatives from Ghana, Senegal, Gambia, Rwanda, South Africa, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
In his inaugural address, President Doumbouya pledged to uphold democratic principles, ensure transparent governance and preserve peace and national cohesion.
Vice President Shettima’s visit also served as a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding economic cooperation between Nigeria and Guinea.
