Nigeria’s security situation has drawn sharp criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which blamed the Tinubu administration for failing to contain rising terrorist attacks, following the country’s alarming ranking in the 2026 Global Terrorism Index.

In a statement on Thursday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong said the report highlights a worsening security crisis, with Nigeria now ranking fourth globally for terrorism-related deaths. The index, released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), noted a 46% increase in fatalities, from 513 in 2024 to 750 in 2025, placing the country among those accounting for nearly 70% of deaths in the Sahel region.
Reacting to the report, the PDP accused the Tinubu administration of negligence.
“While terrorists continue to kill and abduct citizens, those charged with protecting the country appear more concerned with foreign trips and pageantry than urgent action”, the statement said.
The opposition party also warned that insecurity has become entrenched as a “trillion-naira economy”, urging the government to adopt a coordinated, society-wide approach to halt attacks and implement long-term strategies for sustainable peace.
“The fundamental duty of any government is to protect lives and property. Sadly, this administration has consistently failed”, the PDP said, calling on President Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies to act decisively.
The report highlighted the continued activity of Boko Haram, ISWAP, and emerging groups such as Lakurawa, noting that while global terrorism trends show declines, Nigeria faces a unique and growing threat that demands urgent attention.
