The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has unveiled plans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of women’s policing in Nigeria.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Wednesday, stated that the IGP will join serving and retired female officers to mark this historic occasion, scheduled to hold from 3 to 4 December 2025.
He said, “In the past seven decades, women of the Nigeria Police Force have distinguished themselves in various capacities — from administration and investigations to tactical operations and command leadership. They have embodied integrity, empathy, and excellence in service to the nation. Through their selfless commitment, they have redefined policing with compassion and purpose.
“Activities marking the anniversary include a national lecture, a historical exhibition, interactive panel sessions, and an outreach programme.”
He stressed that the celebration reinforces the IGP’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, professionalism, and continuous capacity development for women in policing.
“The Nigeria Police Force extends heartfelt appreciation to all female officers, past and present, who have served in its ranks. Their courage and professionalism remain a source of pride and inspiration to the institution and the nation,” Hundeyin stated.
The celebration of 70 years of women in policing, he said, marks seven decades of courage, resilience, and dedicated service since the first set of policewomen were enlisted in 1955.
This milestone, he added, underscores the vital role of women in strengthening law enforcement and fostering community trust across the nation.
Commending the invaluable contributions of these officers to the operational effectiveness and public image of the Force, the IGP noted that their dedication and compassion have continued to be integral to the foundation of policing in Nigeria.
