A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Mumuni, has urged Nigeria to overhaul its security strategy in response to the growing use of drone technology across Africa.
In a statement issued by his media office, Mumuni warned that unmanned aerial vehicles are increasingly accessible to armed groups, changing the nature of security threats in regions battling insurgency and cross-border crime. He noted that reliance on conventional defence systems is no longer sufficient to address technology-driven risks.
He called on security agencies to strengthen surveillance capabilities, deploy counter-drone systems, and train personnel to detect and neutralise unauthorised aerial devices.
Mumuni also stressed the importance of regional cooperation, urging West African countries to deepen intelligence sharing and coordinate responses to emerging threats.
While advocating tighter regulations on drone operations, he encouraged investment in local innovation to reduce dependence on foreign technology and enhance national preparedness.
He said proactive reforms and sustained investment in modern security infrastructure are critical to safeguarding Nigeria and its neighbours against evolving challenges.
He added that developing indigenous drone technology would strengthen national preparedness and reduce reliance on foreign solutions.
