Nigeria is taking a major step toward modernizing its environmental management. The Ministry of Environment has launched the 1Gov Cloud Digitalization Program, a unified platform designed to centralize environmental data and streamline government operations.
Speaking on the nitiative, Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal said, “Digitalization is no longer optional; it is essential. With the Galaxy Backbone 1Government Cloud, we are enabling smarter, data-driven environmental management, reducing operational costs, and lowering carbon emissions”.
The 1Gov Cloud will allow the ministry to migrate its internal systems and databases to a secure national cloud infrastructure. This will simplify the collection, sharing, and analysis of vital data on pollution, biodiversity, and waste management, while enhancing collaboration across departments.
The initiative is part of Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at creating a more efficient, transparent, and accessible public sector. By centralizing environmental data, the government can implement smarter, evidence-based policies to tackle environmental challenges nationwide.
Nigeria’s digital progress is notable. In 2024, the country scored 0.5372 out of 1 on the United Nations Online Service Index, above the African average and approaching the global benchmark, highlighting its growing leadership in digital governance across the continent.
With the launch of the 1Gov Cloud, the government assures Nigeria is embracing a smarter, greener, and more efficient future for environmental management.
