New “Produced” Status Lets Applicants Know When Passports Are Ready for Collection or Delivery
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has unveiled an upgraded passport tracking system to give applicants clearer insight into the status of their passports amid widespread complaints over processing delays.
Announced via the Service’s verified X handle on Thursday, the new feature introduces a “PRODUCED (PASSPORT PRODUCED, READY FOR COLLECTION)” status to help applicants distinguish between passports still in production and those ready for pickup or courier delivery.
The update comes after mounting public frustration, including reports of delays stretching several months. Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo highlighted the issue after waiting over six months for his passport renewal, despite completing payment and biometric capture in July 2025. The NIS confirmed that Soyombo’s passport had already been produced and was ready for delivery, noting that delays can also result from incomplete applications or technical issues.
“This update enhances the existing tracking system and helps applicants stay informed about timelines for passports produced and awaiting collection or delivery,” the NIS stated.
The announcement follows recent price adjustments for passports, part of reforms aimed at improving efficiency and document quality. Since September 2025, a 32-page passport (5-year validity) now costs ₦100,000, up from ₦50,000, while a 64-page passport (10-year validity) is now ₦200,000. This marks the second price increase within 12 months.
The enhanced tracking system is expected to reduce uncertainty and streamline passport collection, ensuring applicants can monitor progress without unnecessary delays.
