In a significant move to boost Nigeria’s security capacity, the Defence Headquarters has confirmed the arrival of United States military personnel in the country’s North-east region.
According to Defence Headquarters spokesperson Samaila Uba, around 100 US troops, along with their equipment, landed at Bauchi airfield. He explained that their mission is focused solely on training, technical support, and intelligence sharing, and they will not be involved in any combat operations.
“The deployment follows discussions between Nigerian and U.S. defence officials and responds to a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for specialised military support. This collaboration is aimed at strengthening our forces’ ability to counter terrorist threats and protect vulnerable communities”, Uba said.
Uba emphasised that the visiting U.S. personnel are acting strictly as advisers and technical specialists. “They are here to provide guidance and training. They are not combat troops”, he noted.
All activities involving the US team will be conducted under the authority and supervision of the Nigerian government, in close coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Nigerian troops and US advisers are expected to begin joint training exercises and intelligence-focused initiatives designed to improve operational readiness and effectiveness in counter-terrorism operations.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to degrading and defeating terrorist groups that threaten national security and the safety of our citizens”, Uba added. He also reassured Nigerians that the Defence Headquarters will continue providing clear, accurate, and timely updates on the ongoing military cooperation efforts.
