The Nigerian government, in partnership with Google and Google.org, has launched a N3 billion initiative to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) development and strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem. The program aims to build AI talent, enhance cybersecurity, and equip young innovators with skills for global competitiveness.
The Minister of Communication, Innovation & Digital Economy said AI is central to boosting productivity and economic growth, noting that the collaboration supports Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and positions local innovators at the forefront of the global AI revolution while ensuring a skilled and secure digital workforce.
Funding will support five organisations. FATE Foundation, with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), will integrate advanced AI curricula into universities across Nigeria and other African nations. The African Technology Forum (ATF) will host an innovation challenge guiding developers from learning AI to building real-world solutions. Junior Achievement (JA) Africa will scale the “Be Internet Awesome” program to promote digital safety for youth, while the CyberSafe Foundation will strengthen cybersecurity in public institutions.
Adenike Adeyemi of FATE Foundation described the initiative as a transformative opportunity to close the AI skills gap and foster innovation across Africa. Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, highlighted that the initiative builds on Google’s existing support, including the Equiano subsea cable and previous digital skills programs, and focuses on empowering individuals while ensuring safe and responsible use of technology.
The program exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships to advance national AI priorities, nurture talent, and drive economic growth. By equipping the next generation with AI skills, it aims to cement Nigeria’s leadership in digital innovation across Africa and beyond.
