Muslims across Nigeria have commenced the Ramadan fast after the Sultanate Council announced the sighting of the crescent moon, formally signalling the start of the holy month.
The announcement was made by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto following verified reports of the new moon from different parts of the country.
The development marks the beginning of Ramadan 1447AH, a sacred period in Islam observed through fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayers, and acts of charity.
Ramadan is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam and is a time devoted to spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and devotion to faith.
During the period, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours, while also engaging in nightly prayers and humanitarian activities.
Faithful across major cities and communities have begun participating in Taraweeh prayers at mosques, marking the formal commencement of the month-long observance.
Religious leaders also encouraged Muslims to use the period to promote peace, unity, and compassion, while offering prayers for the nation.
