Nigeria strengthened their bid for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a crucial 2–1 victory over Lesotho on Friday, holding off a late fightback from the hosts in a scrappy but significant qualifier.
After a goalless first half in which the Super Eagles dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances, captain William Troost-Ekong finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute from the penalty spot, converting coolly after a defensive lapse by Lesotho.
Nigeria grew in confidence after the opener, controlling the game and pressing for a second goal. Their efforts paid off when striker Akor Adams doubled the lead in the 80th minute, finishing a well-worked move that gave the visitors a two-goal cushion.
Lesotho, who had offered little attacking threat for much of the match, responded five minutes later through Hlompho Kalake, whose goal gave the home fans hope of a dramatic equalizer. Despite mounting late pressure, Nigeria’s defense stood firm to preserve all three points.
It was far from a vintage display from the Super Eagles, who lacked intensity and cohesion for long stretches, with Victor Osimhen struggling to find form in front of goal. However, the result keeps Nigeria on course in their qualification campaign.
