Nigeria is seeking election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, marking a renewed effort to rejoin the global body after its previous membership ended in 2020.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, presented the country’s candidacy in a video statement on Tuesday, describing the council as an important platform for dialogue, prevention and international cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to engaging fully with the council’s mechanisms and supporting efforts to strengthen global human rights standards.
Tuggar said Nigeria remains dedicated to protecting fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion and belief, stressing that peaceful coexistence among faith communities is central to national unity. “Nigeria remains resolute in ensuring a society where every citizen, regardless of creed or tribe, stands protected under the shield of justice,” he said.
He also highlighted ongoing domestic reforms, including investments in safe schools, social protection programmes and the digital economy, noting that these initiatives support inclusive development and accountability.
According to him, Nigeria is strengthening cooperation at regional and international levels to ensure that human rights and humanitarian principles are integrated into internal security operations, with priority given to civilian protection.
On climate action, the minister emphasised that human rights and environmental protection are interconnected.
“Nigeria knows firsthand that the exercise of human rights today is inseparable from environmental protection”, he said, adding that the country remains committed to climate adaptation strategies aligned with sustainable development goals.
Nigeria’s last term on the UNHRC followed its election for the 2018–2020 cycle. Council elections are held annually, with member states serving three-year terms on a rotational basis.
Tuggar said Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and largest democracy, is prepared to collaborate with international partners to advance peace, justice and sustainable development globally.
