The Nigerian Army’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has identified informants as a significant obstacle in the military’s ongoing efforts to combat insurgency and banditry, especially in the volatile northeast and northwest regions.
Brigadier General Tukur Ismail Gusau, Director of Information at DHQ, made the remarks during a media engagement in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The visit was part of a directive from the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, aimed at rallying media support to prevent the security challenges in the northwest from escalating to the level witnessed in the northeast.
Speaking to journalists, General Gusau stressed the importance of accurate and morale-boosting reporting, urging the media to highlight the courage and dedication of soldiers rather than publishing stories that could undermine their efforts.
He revealed plans to establish an army brigade in Kebbi alongside the existing military base to enhance security for local citizens. However, he emphasized that military success heavily depends on civilian cooperation, estimating that the army contributes only 30% to counter-insurgency operations, while 70% depends on public support.
General Gusau also provided encouraging news about the ongoing fight against insurgency, noting that over 120 insurgents have surrendered through designated safe corridors. He clarified that the army does not engage in peace deals directly but receives those who surrender after reaching agreements with relevant authorities.
“Our efforts continue despite the challenges posed by informants embedded within communities who aid insurgents,” he said.
