Authorities in Niger State are taking action to reclaim Kainji Lake forest from terrorist camps and ensure the safety of surrounding settlements.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago disclosed the plan during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, at his palace in New Bussa, following recent attacks in the Emirate. The governor expressed deep concern over the influx of unverified settlers into the area, describing it as a major security challenge.
Residents living in hamlets around Kainji Lake have been given two months to vacate the area, with resettlement to be coordinated by the Emirate Council. Governor Bago also urged the council to collaborate closely with security agencies and government authorities to combat insecurity effectively. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for peace and comfort for the affected communities.
Earlier, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to national security, noting that reclaiming the forest and relocating residents would help restore safety and promote community development.
The Emir of Borgu pledged full cooperation with authorities to identify and prosecute informants aiding criminal activities. He emphasized that the protection of lives and property is paramount and assured the governor of the Emirate’s support for policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people.
