The National Assembly Niger State Caucus has called for decisive, coordinated, and sustained action at all levels of government to tackle rising insecurity in the state.
In a statement signed by all 13 lawmakers, the caucus condemned the kidnapping of students and staff of St. Mary’s School in Agwara LGA, urging their immediate rescue.
The caucus outlined urgent measures needed to restore security:
-
Enhanced military and security deployment across flashpoints, especially border communities like Agwara.
-
Strengthened intelligence gathering and rapid-response mechanisms to prevent attacks.
-
Improved inter-agency collaboration and support for community-based security initiatives.
-
Greater federal government intervention to reinforce the efforts of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and Niger State authorities.
Expressing “deep concern and profound sorrow,” the lawmakers said the abduction is “a painful reminder of the severe security challenges confronting our state and nation”.
They added, “We stand in full solidarity with Governor Bago, the people of Agwara, the affected families, and the entire citizenry of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with the children, their parents, teachers, and the community traumatised by this senseless act. We strongly condemn this criminal attack and reaffirm our resolve to work with security agencies to ensure the safe and immediate rescue of the abducted students. No child or community should be left at the mercy of terror”.
Highlighting the worsening insecurity in Niger State and Northern Nigeria, the caucus noted:
“From bandit attacks and mass kidnappings to terrorism and communal violence, rising insecurity continues to endanger lives, disrupt livelihoods, and destabilize communities”.
They pledged to engage the federal government and security institutions to prioritize Niger State, advocating for:
-
Increased funding, personnel, and operational capacity for security agencies.
-
Legislative reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s overall security framework.
-
Ensuring the safety of citizens remains central in national policy.
The caucus urged constituents to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing rescue operations while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the abducted students home safely and hold the perpetrators accountable.
