The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has strongly condemned the killing of 22-year-old Nigerian e-hailing driver, Isaac Satlet, in Pretoria, South Africa.
NiDCOM’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved, describing the growing spate of attacks on Nigerians in South Africa as deeply troubling.
The statement was released on Sunday by the Commission’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
“Despite the longstanding brotherly ties between Nigeria and South Africa, it is alarming that heinous crimes continue to be perpetrated against our citizens,” Dabiri-Erewa said. She urged South African authorities to ensure justice is served for the slain driver and to take proactive steps to protect the lives and property of non-indigenes in the country.
The NiDCOM boss also emphasised the importance of strengthening rapid response protocols and institutionalised escalation mechanisms for incidents involving the diaspora. She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to risk mapping and structured engagement with host authorities to safeguard Nigerians abroad.
According to reports, Satlet was attacked on February 11, 2026, after picking up passengers through an e-hailing platform in Pretoria West. Police indicated that a male and female pair hijacked his vehicle, and his body, along with the stolen car, was later recovered in Atteridgeville.
Dashcam footage captured part of the incident, aiding in the swift arrest of the female suspect, who is scheduled to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on February 16, facing charges of carjacking and murder. Authorities continue to search for the male suspect, with additional arrests anticipated.
The killing has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for enhanced safety measures for e-hailing drivers. Satlet, a student set to graduate next month, is being remembered as hardworking and ambitious, with plans to pursue further studies in Canada.
This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stronger protections for Nigerians living and working abroad and reinforced NiDCOM’s resolve to advocate for their welfare and safety.
