American rap superstar Nicki Minaj has appealed to her global fanbase to be more considerate in how they respond to Nigerian artistes currently facing intense public scrutiny.
In recent weeks, several Nigerian performers have been heavily criticised for comments perceived as insensitive or dismissive, especially during a period marked by security crises and national grief.
Rising Criticism of Nigerian Celebrities
Burna Boy triggered outrage after joking that he preferred to have “only rich fans,” a remark many Nigerians considered insensitive given the country’s harsh economic realities.
Similarly, singer Yemi Alade came under fire for condemning potential US involvement in addressing Nigeria’s insecurity challenges, a stance some critics interpreted as tone-deaf.
A number of other celebrities were also called out for sharing unrelated content at a time when the nation was mourning multiple tragedies, including a terrorist attack on a church in Kwara State and the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
“Use wisdom and compassion,” Minaj says
Reacting to the growing tension, Minaj took to X (formerly Twitter) to urge fans to approach criticism with empathy rather than hostility.
“My darlings, let’s utilize wisdom & compassion as it relates to our Nigerian artists,” she wrote. “There are very logical reasons for most things when we look not to judge, but to comprehend. That goes for every country & their artists. Let’s lift them & continue to use wisdom.”
Her comments come shortly after she received praise from Nigerian audiences for addressing alleged jihadist attacks on Christians during a United Nations event in New York, where she highlighted the importance of religious freedom and stronger global action against terrorism.
Minaj’s call is expected to reignite conversations about the pressures placed on public figures and the need for more thoughtful engagement in moments of national difficulty.
