American rapper Nicki Minaj has explained her decision to publicly comment on the situation facing Christians in Nigeria, saying personal connections to the country and reports of violence against worshippers made it impossible for her to remain silent.
Minaj addressed the issue during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest, where she responded to questions from the audience about Nigeria and religious persecution. She said the country holds special meaning for her, describing the reports of attacks on Christians as deeply disturbing.
According to the rapper, her connection to Nigeria goes beyond admiration. She revealed that her pastor is Nigerian and noted that she enjoys strong support from Nigerian fans, often referred to as “Nigerian barbs.” These relationships, she said, heightened her concern over reports of kidnappings and killings during church gatherings.
Minaj stressed that incidents of people being attacked while practising their faith should trigger international outrage, regardless of where they occur. She argued that silence in the face of such reports only encourages further oppression.
Declaring a shift in her public stance, the music star said she is no longer willing to stay quiet on issues affecting Christians globally. She emphasised that speaking up is necessary to confront persecution and protect freedom of worship.
The rapper also broadened the conversation to religious freedom worldwide, warning that the right to worship openly is often taken for granted in countries where it is protected. She urged people to remember those who must practise their faith in secrecy and fear.
Minaj’s comments come weeks after she reacted to a social media post by United States President Donald Trump, who claimed that Christianity faces serious threats in Nigeria. At the time, she expressed gratitude for the freedom to worship and condemned religious persecution in all forms.
During her remarks at AmericaFest, Minaj also praised Trump and Vice President JD Vance, saying they understand the concerns of ordinary people. She added that Christians also face challenges in the United States, arguing that leadership plays a critical role in safeguarding religious liberties.
Her comments have since sparked renewed debate online about religious freedom, global responsibility and the role of public figures in drawing attention to persecution.
