The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has paid glowing tribute to Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, following his retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong announced his exit from the national team on Thursday after a decade of service, during which he earned 83 caps and featured in multiple major tournaments.
In a statement signed by the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, the federation said it received the news of the defender’s retirement with “deep pride and gratitude.”
“Ekong gave everything to the Super Eagles,” Olajire said. “He led with passion, calmness and responsibility, and he served Nigeria with outstanding patriotism. He was a model professional and a leader younger players should emulate.”
Troost-Ekong, 32, captained Nigeria to a runners-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He also represented the country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and won bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
His departure comes just weeks before the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
