The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed reports that it plans to amend its governing statutes during the Annual General Assembly (AGA) scheduled for September 27 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement on Thursday, the NFF stressed that there were “no plans” to alter its framework at the meeting, explaining that any statutory changes would require a separate congress after full consultations with stakeholders, FIFA, and CAF.
The clarification comes after the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) declared a nationwide boycott of all NFF activities over its continued exclusion from the federation’s congress.
SWAN accused the NFF of sidelining the sporting media while presiding over a period of decline in Nigerian football.
The NFF revealed that a workshop will precede the assembly on September 26, bringing together FIFA and CAF officials along with member representatives to discuss possible reforms in line with global best practices.
“The consultation process is still at an early stage,” the federation said.
“Only after a common direction is agreed with our members may a General Assembly be convened specifically to consider and adopt proposed statutes.”
Following the clarification, SWAN announced it had relaxed its boycott, calling it a “fresh opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue.”
SWAN president Isaiah Benjamin reaffirmed the association’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency, pledging to continue advocating for the recognition of the sporting media in Nigerian football governance.
The NFF says its long-term goal is to establish “robust and enduring statutes” that will strengthen governance and improve representation within Nigerian football.
