Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes Manchester City and Liverpool will still put pressure on Arsenal in the Premier League title race despite the Gunners’ strong start.
Neville was analysing during an interview after Manchester City dismantled the reigning champions 3–0 at the Etihad. Erling Haaland opened the scoring with a towering header before Nico Gonzalez doubled City’s lead with a deflected strike just before half-time. Jeremy Doku sealed the win with a superb curling effort from distance.
The defeat was Liverpool’s fifth in 11 league games, leaving them eighth and eight points behind leaders Arsenal. Manchester City, meanwhile, sit four points off the top.
Despite Liverpool’s struggles, Neville is not ruling them out.
“I thought the biggest challenger to title favourites Arsenal would be Liverpool. I thought Man City were too inconsistent, but it looks like I was badly wrong,” he said.
“They’ve still got to convince me they’re going to win the title. Arsenal are the better team, but City are the one team and the one manager you wouldn’t want on your shoulder going down the home straight.”
Asked if Liverpool could still be considered contenders, Neville replied: “I’m going to say yes. If it clicked, something could happen. They’ve got firecrackers and world-class players in that dressing room.”
The Premier League title race is beginning to take shape, but Neville insists it is far from over.
