The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced the commencement of activities to mark its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of overseeing and reforming the nation’s power sector.
In a statement, the Commission said the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on its evolution from its establishment amid the challenges of a newly unbundled electricity sector to its current role as a key driver of reforms, market stability, and consumer protection.
Established on October 31, 2005, under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005, now replaced by the Electricity Act 2023, NERC has played a central role in shaping Nigeria’s electricity market structure and regulatory framework.
“Over the past twenty years, the Commission has championed reforms that promote transparency, accountability, consumer protection, and sustainable growth across the sector,” the statement said.
NERC Charts the Future of Nigeria’s Power Market
To commemorate the anniversary, the Commission said it will host a series of events and stakeholder engagements designed to showcase its achievements, deepen collaboration, and set a forward-looking agenda for the next phase of Nigeria’s electricity development.
Participants will include representatives from government, the private sector, development partners, and consumer advocacy groups, who will reflect on the progress made so far and discuss strategies to build a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity industry.
Speaking ahead of the celebrations, NERC Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, described the anniversary as both a milestone and a renewal of commitment to Nigeria’s power consumers and investors.
“This 20th anniversary is not just a milestone, it’s a reaffirmation of our mandate to protect consumers, promote investment, and ensure a level playing field in Nigeria’s electricity sector,” Oseni said.
“We remain committed to driving reforms that deliver tangible value to Nigerians.”
Activities to Honour Pioneers and Strengthen Collaboration
The celebration will feature a technical session with panel discussions by leading experts in the power sector, a health and wellness event, and a commemorative dinner to honour pioneers, late staff members, and past commissioners who contributed to NERC’s growth.
The Commission said these activities are part of efforts to foster innovation, collaboration, and public engagement in Nigeria’s electricity ecosystem.
“As NERC looks ahead to the next 20 years, the Commission remains steadfast in its mission to regulate the electricity supply industry in the public interest, balancing the needs of consumers and operators while supporting Nigeria’s energy transition,” the statement added.
