The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has expressed its appreciation for the management of Delta State University, Abraka, for implementing a student-friendly directive that benefits students enrolled in the NELFUND loan scheme.
This initiative allows students with verified or disbursed loan statuses to participate in their first semester examinations for the 2025/2026 academic year, a Statement by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director, Strategic Communications, NELFUND disclosed.
An internal memorandum from the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) outlined that students whose statuses on the NELFUND platform indicate either “Verified” or “Disbursed” are eligible to sit for their exams by presenting evidence of their loan status at the examination venue.
Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director and CEO of NELFUND, lauded this decision as a significant example of collaboration aimed at supporting Nigerian students in their educational pursuits. “We warmly welcome this student-centered approach by Delta State University. It reflects a clear understanding of the purpose of the NELFUND scheme, which is to ensure that no Nigerian student is denied access to education because of financial constraints,” he stated.
Mr. Sawyerr emphasized that NELFUND is pleased to witness educational institutions adopting practical, youth-friendly initiatives that allow students who have completed the application process to continue their academic activities without interruption.

He remarked, “Such actions reinforce the broader objective of the NELFUND programme, which is to expand access to higher education while promoting fairness and inclusivity across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.”
In encouraging other educational institutions to follow Delta State University’s example, NELFUND stressed the importance of prioritizing students’ academic progress while financial support through the loan process is facilitated.
The Fund is committed to collaborating closely with universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide to ensure successful implementation of the student loan programme, safeguarding the educational aspirations of Nigerian students.
