In a significant development for higher education financing, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) announced on Friday that it has disbursed a total of N1,326,550,000 to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to support the 2025/2026 academic session.
This funding is designated for 6,308 eligible UNILAG students who have fulfilled all requirements outlined in the NELFUND student loan programme.
Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, confirmed that the funds were successfully disbursed to the university on January 19, 2026, in accordance with the approved disbursement schedule.
As part of standard procedures, beneficiary lists are compiled based on verified institutional data submitted during the application and validation processes, ensuring transparency and reliability in the allocation of funds.
This disbursement underscores NELFUND’s commitment to providing financial support for students, facilitating their educational pursuits at one of Nigeria’s premier institutions.
“With the disbursement to the institution, students should be able to register and access classes without delays. Students are urged to rely on official communications from the Fund and their institutions.
“Students are also encouraged to contact their institution’s bursary or student affairs office, while NELFUND continues engagement with UNILAG to conclude reconciliation,” she noted.
Speaking on the matter, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to transparency and student welfare.
“NELFUND remains fully committed to ensuring that approved student loan funds are disbursed promptly and applied appropriately. We are working closely with all partner institutions to resolve any administrative gaps and to ensure that no eligible student is disadvantaged.”
