Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has denied claims that he pursued his estranged wife, actress Regina Daniels, for marriage.
The senator made the clarification in response to growing criticism surrounding his six-year marriage to the Nollywood star, following recent public exchanges between the couple.
Two weeks ago, Regina Daniels accused Nwoko of domestic violence and declared that she was no longer interested in the marriage. In turn, the senator alleged that Regina was battling substance abuse and insisted she must undergo rehabilitation.
The dispute drew widespread attention, with several Nigerians, including celebrities, criticizing Nwoko for allegedly marrying Regina when she was just 17. Some also called for his resignation from the Senate.
Addressing the controversy in a statement issued by his Communication and Technical Action Team and shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nwoko maintained that he did not seek out Regina for marriage and dismissed claims that she was underage at the time.
“For clarity, Regina Daniels was born on October 10, 2000. If she has been married to me for six years, that means she married at 19 and not 17. The public witnessed her family giving her away in marriage,” the statement read.
He further alleged that Regina’s mother, Rita Daniels, introduced her daughter to him.
“There were witnesses to the fact that her mother personally brought her to me. I never went after her,” he stated.
The senator’s remarks add another layer to the ongoing public fallout between the couple, whose relationship has long attracted attention within Nigeria’s entertainment and political circles.
