The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has alerted Nigerians to critical security vulnerabilities recently discovered in Google Chrome, warning that the flaws could expose millions of users to cyberattacks if left unaddressed.
The warning follows global alerts from cybersecurity experts, who have flagged the flaws as part of a growing wave of browser-related threats.
The Commission, in a statement on Tuesday, explained that the high-severity vulnerabilities could allow attackers to exploit weaknesses in Chrome to steal personal data, financial information, and other sensitive records.
To mitigate the risks, NDPC urged users to immediately update their browsers to the latest version. It stressed that timely updates are essential to safeguard against potential exploitation.
“Failure to update your browser may expose you to identity theft, loss of sensitive information, and other cyber incidents that could impact your digital safety,” the advisory stated.
The Commission also appealed to organisations, businesses, and government agencies to ensure all systems using Chrome are updated without delay.
In addition, Nigerians were advised to practise good cyber hygiene, such as enabling automatic updates, avoiding suspicious links, and using strong authentication measures, to strengthen their online safety.
