Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has publicly urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to retain Éric Chelle as head coach following the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite Nigeria’s exit in the semi-finals against Morocco, Ndidi believes the team’s progress justifies keeping the Malian tactician in his role.
The Besiktas midfielder emphasized that stability within the coaching staff remains the most effective path toward long-term success for the national team.
Chelle’s status currently remains a subject of intense speculation after the Eagles failed to reach the tournament final, which the NFF had reportedly set as a key objective. The 48-year-old manager recently confirmed his desire to continue leading the squad but acknowledged that the federation holds the final authority regarding his contract. Ndidi’s endorsement comes at a critical juncture as the NFF begins reviewing the team’s performance ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
The Super Eagles currently prepare to face the Pharaohs of Egypt in the third-place play-off this Saturday. Ndidi argued that the quality of football displayed in Morocco reflects a positive shift that the administration should not disrupt. By prioritizing continuity, the captain hopes the federation will allow Chelle to build upon the tactical foundation established during this tournament as they transition into the next phase of competition.
Ndidi stated: “All I want is that we keep the coach. We should be focused on continuity at this point.”
