New aerodrome certificates affirm compliance with global safety standards and enhance investor confidence
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially issued aerodrome certificates to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) and Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport (JOAIA), Port Harcourt, confirming that both facilities meet international operational and safety standards.
The certificates were presented on Friday in Abuja by Chris Najomo, Director-General of the NCAA, who described the milestone as a significant boost for airlines, investors, and passengers.
“This certification validates that both airports’ operational procedures and safety management systems meet global benchmarks. It enhances the airports’ risk profile, improves insurance terms, and strengthens confidence in Nigerian aviation,” Najomo said.
He noted that the certification aligns with the Aviation Minister’s five-point agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasize infrastructure renewal, institutional strengthening, and improved service delivery in strategic national sectors, including aviation.
“Through sustained collaboration and rigorous inspections, both MAKIA and JOAIA are now fully compliant, with no outstanding safety concerns,” Najomo added.
With this development, four out of Nigeria’s five designated international airports are now certified. The other certified airports are Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Rigorous process ensures compliance
The certification followed multiple inspections, issuance of corrective action notices, and submission of corrective action plans by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to address identified gaps.
“The NCAA is more than a regulator, it is a partner, providing guidance, rigorous scrutiny, and technical expertise to ensure compliance with global standards,” said Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN Managing Director.
She praised FAAN teams in Kano and Port Harcourt for their dedication in meeting the stringent requirements, describing the certification as a shared achievement that prioritizes safety, regulatory compliance, and national interest.
Najomo reaffirmed NCAA’s commitment to maintaining strict adherence to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations and International Civil Aviation Organisation standards, while promoting technology-driven operations and transparent processes to support sustainable aviation growth and the national economy.
