NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday reaffirmed that the military alliance and the European Union (EU) are intensifying collaboration to establish a drone wall aimed at protecting member states from hostile drone incursions.
When asked whether both organisations were “doubling their efforts,” the NATO chief explained that while the EU and NATO share the same strategic goal, their roles differ significantly in execution.
The EU and NATO have different responsibilities, Rutte said. He stated that NATO provides capabilities on the military side and the EU holds the soft power of the internal market and makes sure the money is there.
Observers say the renewed cooperation between NATO and the EU signals a more unified European approach to emerging security challenges, particularly those posed by unmanned aerial systems increasingly used in espionage and cross-border attacks.
