Fresh assurances have emerged from the National Assembly of Nigeria, which has pledged stronger legislative backing, funding and oversight to support the military and other security agencies in tackling terrorism and insecurity.
Deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, gave the assurance during a news conference in Abuja.
He was reacting to the recent terrorist attack on troops of the Nigerian Army in Benisheikh, Borno State, which led to the death of Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah and several others.
Agbese acknowledged that Nigeria is grappling with multiple security threats, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
He said the legislature is committed to working closely with the executive arm of government to confront the situation and restore stability.
According to him, the National Assembly will stand firmly with the armed forces and all security agencies to defeat terrorists and criminal groups threatening the country’s unity.
The lawmaker commended frontline troops for their courage and sacrifices, describing them as patriots dedicated to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
He noted that defence and security remain a top priority for the House of Representatives, with a focus on improved funding, better welfare for personnel and enhanced intelligence gathering.
Agbese also stressed the importance of strong oversight of defence spending to ensure transparency, accountability and effective use of resources.
He emphasised that timely funding for critical military equipment and operations is essential to winning the fight against insurgency and terrorism.
While acknowledging competing national demands, he maintained that prioritising security funding is crucial to addressing evolving threats.
Agbese further called on Nigerians to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information, noting that the fight against insecurity requires collective effort.
He expressed confidence that sustained collaboration between the legislature, executive and security agencies would help Nigeria overcome its security challenges and restore lasting peace.
